Tax time feels stressful mostly when the books are behind. These five habits take little time each week and make filing, payroll and year-end work far smoother.
1. Keep business and personal money separate
Open a dedicated business bank account and credit card. Mixed transactions are the most common reason books become hard to sort out, and they make it harder to support your expenses if the CRA asks.
2. Reconcile every month
Match your books to your bank and credit card statements each month. Small differences are easy to find while the month is fresh and hard to untangle a year later.
3. Capture receipts as you go
Photograph or upload receipts the same day. Digital copies are accepted by the CRA, and you will not lose faded paper receipts. Note what each purchase was for if it is not obvious.
4. Treat sales tax as money you are holding
GST you collect is not your income. Move it to a separate account or track it clearly, so the payment at filing time is not a surprise.
5. Review simple reports monthly
Look at your profit and loss and your cash position once a month. You do not need to be an accountant. You are looking for numbers that seem wrong, costs creeping up, and unpaid customer invoices.
If keeping up is the hard part, we can take it over on a flat monthly rate. See our pricing or get a free quote.
